Wednesday evening at 7:19 pm Pingree Grove and Countryside responded for a structure fire at 37W858 Highland Ave. On arrival personnel found an abandoned house well involved. Personnel made an aggressive attack with two hose lines. The fire had too much headway and had gotten up into the attic. The decision was made by command, due to the condition of the building and fire conditions, to pull back and and let the building burn. Personnel protected the exposures and vegetation around the building. Fire operations were also hampered by a natural gas fire coming from the gas service to the building. Nicor was called to the scene to shut off the gas at the street. The fire was struck at 12:42 am. with the last units returning at 1:13 am. Approximately 31,000 Gallons of water was used. There were no injuries and the fire is under investigation. Highland Ave was closed for about 6 hours.
